The HSBA Board voted yesterday to approve the creation of the Appellate Section of the state bar.
As we previously blogged here, the purposes of the Appellate Section will be: (1) to develop and encourage the practice of the highest standards of conduct for attorneys in the State of Hawaii and particularly among attorneys practicing appellate law, including working with justices and appellate judges to improve the Hawaii appellate process; (2) to aid and assist the Section’s members in their practice as it relates to appellate law; and (3) to provide a forum for the exchange of experiences and ideas through discussion, study, and publication, including offering continuing legal education and disseminating materials on matters of interest to the appellate bar and the judiciary.
Over the next month, we will be contacting those HSBA members who expressed interest in joining the Section (as well as others). We hope to hold an informal meeting sometime in the next couple months to allow interested appellate practitioners to meet and greet.
Although the Section will not officially start collecting dues until HSBA renewals are sent out for 2012, we may hold a meeting to elect a Board for the upcoming 2012 year. Late this year or early next year, we also hope to hold a joint meeting with the HSBA Litigation Section to discuss motion practice in the Hawaii appellate courts.
Details will be forthcoming, please stay tuned!

Congratulations to HSBA's newest section.
